HELP WANTED:

Independent Web Developer Consultant

Are You a Code Maverick Ready to Power Up the Next Stage of a Retro Computing Legend?

COMPUTE!’s Gazette, the iconic magazine that fueled the imaginations of a generation of 8-bit computer users, is back! We’re relaunching with a new mission: to celebrate the entire spectrum of retro computing, from the golden age of the 8-bit era to the dawn of the modern PC. To help us build our new digital home, we’re seeking a talented and passionate Independent Web Developer Consultant.

This is a unique opportunity to blend your modern web development expertise with a genuine love for the classic machines that started it all. We’re looking for a self-starter who can take the lead in building and shaping our online presence.

Your Mission, Should You Choose to Accept It:

  • Construct our Community Hub: Design, implement, and maintain a vibrant and engaging phpBB-based community forum, a place for retro computing enthusiasts from all walks of life to connect, share, and collaborate.
  • Build our Digital Magazine Stand: Develop and manage our official WordPress site, the primary destination for our new articles, reviews, and a growing archive of classic Gazette content.
  • Create a Marketplace for Retro Treasures: Develop a secure and user-friendly auction section on our website, allowing our community to buy, sell, and trade vintage hardware, software, and memorabilia.
  • Be our Digital Quarterback: Provide ongoing consultation and support for all our web-based initiatives, ensuring a seamless and enjoyable experience for our readers and community members.

The Ideal Candidate Will Possess the Following Skills:

  • Proven expertise in PHPBB forum creation and customization.
  • Strong proficiency in WordPress development, including theme and plugin customization.
  • Demonstrable experience in developing and implementing secure online auction functionalities.
  • A solid understanding of PHP, MySQL, HTML5, CSS3, and JavaScript.
  • The ability to work independently, manage projects, and meet deadlines.

Bonus Points if You:

  • Are an active and engaged member of the 8-bit retro computing community.
  • Can lovingly recall the distinctive boot-up sounds of a Commodore 64, Apple II, or Atari 800.
  • Have a passion for preserving digital history and a desire to contribute to the thriving retro-tech scene.
  • Possess an appreciation for the design aesthetic and spirit of classic computer magazines.

This is a remote, contract-based position. If you’re a skilled web developer who gets just as excited about a clean line of code as you do about a newly discovered PEEK or POKE, we want to hear from you.
